About this work
Thoreau MacDonald’s “The Plough” (1947-53) is informed by the artist’s teen years as a farmhand and inspired by the landscape of Thornhill in the early 20th century. In this image, a quintet of Canadian geese passes in the classic “V” formation above a freshly ploughed field on its way south for the winter. Seven of MacDonald’s works were included in the Sampson-Matthews silkscreen art program, the most of any artist other than A.Y. Jackson.
