About this work
Early evidence of the importance of hockey to Canadian culture, Thoreau MacDonald’s “Winter Evening” (1947-1953) presents a dusky Ontario scene of three children skating on a small clearing of ice after all their chores are done and before darkness descends. Seven of MacDonald’s works were included in the Sampson-Matthews silkscreen art program, the most of any artist other than A.Y. Jackson.
